The Best Films of 2009

Here are some movies I very much enjoyed this year, but that did not quite make my list:

Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, District 9, An Education, I Love You Man, Invictus, Pirate Radio, Public Enemies, A Single Man, Star Trek, State of Play

And for the big list this year I decided to go with 14 films, for no reason. (Links are to my own reviews.)

The Best Films of 2009

* Though I don't think I need to justify my own opinions here, I feel like I should explain something about picking Avatar as the best film of 2009. I struggled with whether I wanted to place it so high. It does have a few script and character flaws, but when it comes down to it, I honestly believe that Avatar changes the future of filmmaking, and how can I not reward that with the #1 slot?

I also saw 500 Days of Summer and thought it was fantastic. Zooey Deschanel is a favorite of mine. On another note, I saw Avatar for the second time yesterday. The second time I found myself thinking more about the connection between the US Marine invasion on Pandora and the way the US military fought against native americans during the 1800's. I found it interesting even to listen to the dialect of the Na'vi and how it had a similar sound to that of a native american language.

I finally made it to "The Road" before it left theaters. It was incredible.

I saw UP 3 times in theatres and every single time I cried. 10 minutes into the film, tears are falling. Thanks Disney, thanks.
