90 Hours of Fun!

Back in May, I began my little project to watch all 100 films on the "American Film Institute 100 Years, 100 Films" list. At the time, I had seen 61 of the 100 films, leaving me 39 to get through. I wanted to see them all by the end of the summer, but I fell short of my goal a bit. As previously mentioned, I had some trouble getting a hold of a few films, but a few weeks ago I finally finished my mission. I blogged about each new film I watched along the way, so now I thought I would comment as a whole on the experience.

This is not the list I would have come up with for the 100 best American films, but it was a good starting point. As I mentioned, I would replace quite a few of these with other movies, but I am not going to attempt a full-scale critique of the list here; instead I just want to make some comments about the 39 new films I watched.
  • Most of the films of the 39 ranged from "I liked it" to "I liked it a lot."
  • There were I few films that I did not really like very much: It Happened One Night, Duck Soup, Wuthering Heights, An American in Paris
  • But some films I watched were extraordinary: Lawrence of Arabia, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Network, The Deer Hunter, The Wild Bunch, Giant, Shane

All in all, I am very happy I undertook this project. It gave me something to do over the summer, and it provided some much-needed structure to my Netflix queue. In addition, of course, since I am studying film right now, I thought it would be a nice thing to accomplish.

So that's that. I will have a new project soon.
