When you're facing a loaded gun . . .

I saw The Departed. It is brilliant, uncompromising, entertaining, violent (very violent), dark, hilarious, and amazing. It is vintage Scorsese, from the violence to the dialogue to the soundtrack. And the acting, from every person in the cast, is stratospherically good. Jack Nicholson is always good of course, and DiCaprio and Damon deliver spot-on performances, full of rage and pain.

Scorsese & his actors

The Departed is one of the best films of the year; in fact, it is one of the best films I have seen in several years, and I think Scorsese may finally get his Oscar.

It's early still to claim Scorsese will win the "Best Director" Oscar. I have to think Paul Greengrass stands a very good chance right now too. The Academy would love to honor a film regarding 9/11.

"not if they have any self respect"

"United 93" was an incredibly well-made film. It's not like I'm talking about the Academy naming "World Trade Center" the "Best Picture." Is your comment realy implying that by naming "United 93" the film of the year that the Academy is selling itself out? (although it certainly wouldn't be a first) I was only implying that it's a nice coincidence for them that the best produced film of the year thus far happens to be about the September 11th attacks.

I'm probably speaking much to soon, though, since the December Oscar-seekers have yet to be released.

"the academy would love to honor a film regarding 9/11" says nothing for the quality of the film, it simply implies that the acdemy is likely to be biased. i havent even seen united 93.

United 93 was a pretty good film, but certainly not Oscar material. And I wouldn't say there was anything exceptional at all about the directing
