Sister Christian, oh the time has come

All right . . . so this is clearly NOT Chicago. I am closer, granted, but this is NOT Chicago. Chicago is only an hour away, and I am happy to be much closer than I was before. But DeKalb (have I said it yet?) is NOT Chicago.

Why do I bring it up? Because this weekend, DeKalb is celebrating Cornfest. It is basically a street fair, with rides and other carnival-like things. But unlike other festivals, Cornfest has a corndog decorating contest. What fun for the kids!

But it is also a music festival. I say festival, but that conjures up images of Moondance Jam, where 10 washed-up/has-been bands play, but at Cornfest, it is a lot of local bands and ONE washed-up/has-been band. This year, we are featuring the musical stylings of NIGHT RANGER! The best thing about Night Ranger is that their biggest song features prominently in the weird firecracker scene in Boogie Nights.

I'm a snob -- what can I say?

In other news:

Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq. The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws. The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you." from Yahoo! News

Sounds rational.

Phelps is a completely psycho. When will he just roll over and die, he already looks like a rolling corpse. I mean, this is the same guy you who decided to protest John Walton's (son of Sam... hahahaha) death because Wal-mart hires gay people. I can understand the idea of protesting Wal-mart, because it sucks, but come one dudes, get with it. He's also the guy with the "### days Mathew Shepherd has been burning in hell" on his website. Yeah, he's nuts.

somebody told me once that the most homophobic people are also the most likely to be repressing their own homosexuality.

my friend katie (ashley's roommate) is from topeka and she used to be on a soccer team with a little phelps girl and they were friends and then one day the girl just randomly told katie that all gays are evil and are going to hell and then katie quit soccer or something. she also told me that their entire family lives in this huge compound with wire fence around it and they're basically just a huge cult and interbreed and beat their kids. so, i mean, they seem pretty nice.

I think that would be quite hard to confirm, Chris.

Several psychological studies show that this is true.

isn't that called projection or sometrhingt? it's some ego-defense mechanism. ask maya's mom.

It's not projection. Projection would be if a gay person thought other people were gay. Maybe it's just plain old denial.

the best bumpersticker ever is "if god didn't make gay people there wouldn't be any."

But . . . as for your comparison. Many people believe that in 10 years, it will be a non-issue. Many polls show that young people today don't give a rip who marries whom, so in a few years, when we no longer need to create smokescreens to take people's minds off the real problems, all will be well.

I think in 10 years political overparticipation will be a problem. These overparticipants will be very similar to parents where high school sports are concerned.
