But they'll never kill the thrills we got

My sister-in-law sent me a link to a site that tells you what song was the Number One song in the country on the day you were born. Since music is so important to my life, I thought it would be fun to check it out and see if there was any connection between the song and me. I guess this is like Pop Music Astrology.

I was born on Febrary 9, 1973. The #1 song in the country that week was "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John.

Does this musical constellation hold any sway in my life? In fact it does, and this little experiment that I meant as a joke turns out to be valid, at least in my case.

When I was little, like maybe 5 years old, I loved being in the car with my parents and playing the radio. I remember quite well that I loved "Crocodile Rock." And this song was already about 5 years old by this time, so my parents must not have been listening to the most up-to-date stations. Now I realize that simply liking a song does not make it significant to one's life. But my connection goes a bit further.

Elton John's Greatest Hits was the first record I ever bought on my own. I was probably 5 or 6, and I probably had some money from my grandparents. So I told my parents that I wanted to be able to listen to "Crocodile Rock" whenever I could, and so they took me to the store where I bought my first album. And I listened to it nonstop for weeks. (Indidentally, the first time that I ever felt that I was getting old was the first time I heard "Crocodile Rock" on an oldies station. I thought, "No! That's not an oldie! That is from MY lifetime!")

And so began my lifelong love affair with music, part of which I chronicled here, and much of which I have written about all over this blog. All because the moon, stars, and Elton John aligned on the day I was born.

Check out your Pop Sign, and comment on its importance in your life, even if you have to stretch. We can't all be aligned with the Cosmos, after all.

"True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper. Let's see...

The first cassette I purchased on my own was Weird Al's "Dare to Be Stupid" which had a song entitled "Girls Just Want to Have Lunch" which was a parody of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper who reached #1 with "True Colors" on the day I was born.

This is just like the Kevin Bacon game.

Well, if you play it that way, it is. But you don't necessarily have to connect it to your first purchase. Perhaps you have a favorite memory of a Kodak commercial that features that song?

Anyway, good work Erik!

And Christie, I don't know what to tell you. I looked and discovered that if you had been born a few days earlier, it would have been "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye. If your mom weren't so slow about everything, you'd have a cool song.
But "We're An American Band"? Sorry, but I can't help you there.

"Ebony and Ivory" by Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder.

Certainly not what I expected, but pleasantly surprising.

Had I been born a couple weeks earlier I would be branded with "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis.

Tom -- That's unfortunate.

"Till now I always got by on my own

I never really cared until I met you

And now it chills me to the bone

How do I get you alone

How do I get you alone."

I remember it well. Growing up in Indiana, I used to listen to WMEE-FM, Ft. Wayne. They played that one a lot.

haha my song is "Alone" by Heart... I don't know, I think it's ironic, well just by looking at the name it's very ironic to my life. I should look up the lyrics...

If I would've been born the year before then my song would've been "Invisible Touch" by Genesis, which would've made more sense as my Dad really like Genesis and played it constantly when I was little.

Oh and Tom, were you born on the 14th of July in 1987????

wow. Mine was "walk like an egyptian." That is weird, because I really did like that song when I was little.... hmmm. muy interesante. And I tend to like songs which have their very own dance, is it really that bad?

"Faith" by George Michael. I DO like the song, enough that it was one of the 30 or so that I downloaded before stopping my piratic habits...

Wanninger, that's really weird. My first CDs were "Elton John's Greatest Hits 1970-2002," though I didn't buy them myself...

"Le Freak" by Chic

The first time my parents had to send me off to the insane asylum, this is the song they played as the men in white coats dragged me out in a straight jacket. My parents always did have a quirky sense of humor and I think that's where all of my problems have stemmed from...

"Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel

here's the deal. there are four songs i have to listen to on repeat. i can't just listen to them once. it's just physically impossible. i can't. one is toto's "africa", one is yazoo's "only you", one is peter gabriel's "in your eyes" and one is ben folds "landed".

i'm a little obsessed with cheesy 80's pop. how did it start? steve miller band's "abracadabra" and the video for peter gabriel's "sledgehammer". fuckin' blew me away, man.

awesome.

Hannah, it has been years since I heard anyone call them Yazoo instead of Yaz. Good stuff. HOwever, I can honestly say that yours in the only list imaginable that could include Peter Gabriel, Yaz, and Toto.

The "Sledgehammer" video indeed changed the way videos were made. Now I want to see it again.

Hannah-
I have "Landed" as my cell phone ring tone. It is becoming problematic because I sometimes pause before answering so I can enjoy the song. People must think I am screening my calls.

"Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago, although when I saw Chicago a couple years later I sat on my dad's shoulders for "Look Away".

"I'll Be There for You," Bon Jovi; okay.

At least I wasn't born ten years later, otherwise I'd fall under the "Livin' La Vida Loca" curse.

I picked a good day, but my year was WAY off.
"Straight Up" by Paula Abdul? Weak. Especially because Feb 25 included such classics as "Billie Jean" ('83), "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (Queen in '80), and "Theme from S.W.A.T." (Rhythm Heritage in '76).

I'll have to time the birth of my child carefully based on this service.
