Brief encounters

Five Famous People I Have Met
(and I define "met" as "briefly spoken with")

  • Fran Tarkenton - He spoke at a conference in my hometown when I was in middle school, and I chatted with him. I was a fan of the t.v. show That's Incredible, not of the Vikings.
  • Tracy Chapman - I was in charge of backstage security when she played at my college. She was very shy but very sweet.

  • Billy Corgan - I had a backstage pass to a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Chicago. He's tall. 6'5" I believe. He joked with my friend Erin that Grinnell College should be called "Grim-Hell."

  • Dennis Rodman - He came into the store where I worked in Chicago and I helped him. He was very nice, and he was with a transgendered woman.
  • Tim Roth - He came into the club where I worked in Chicago. Everyone was telling him how much they liked Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, so I told him how much I liked Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

I met Kristi Yamaguchi. She was shopping at Schaefer's grocery in Nisswa. I was stocking Coke products. I helped her put some twelve packs of root beer in her cart. She owns a cabin with her husband somewhere around there. And she seemed really nice.

Yeah, they used to come in Zorbaz sometimes, but I never spoke with her. I did meet her husband Brett Hedican . They have a place on Gull. I have also met Kevin McHale at Zorbaz a few times.

BTW, Was Rodman actually with a transgendered woman when you met him or was that a joke?

He probably was.

I don't think I've ever met anyone famous... sad.

He really was. My boss knew her and chatted with her. She was kind of famous on the Chicago club scene, which Rodman frequented. She was quite attractive (not at all mannish) and had boobs and everything (implants, of course.) Guys were always hitting on her, but were surprised to learn that she was "pre-op," which means she still had her "man parts" tucked away down there. I remember reading an interview with Rodman the next month and the reporter asked if he was bisexual, and he said that he did not think that he was was, but he mentioned his friend in Chicago with whom he had made out a few times.

Oh crap. I almost forgot about when I interviewed Geraldo Rivera for the Warrior Update back in 2000. He was filming a segment for his show dealing with teenage binge drinking. So I guess he just HAD to film and interview someone at BHS.

I was surprised at how nice he was. His producer told me that I probably wouldn't get any face time with him, and said he definitely would not be available until after the segment was filmed. When he arrived at the school, he immediatly gave me (and someone from the Fifth Street Journal) as much time as I needed.

Too bad he is such a douche bag on tv.

Most famous person I've met was probably the Governor :( But I like him so it's not bad.

On the other hand, I came in pretty close proximity to both Andy Roddick and Pope John Paul II. So that's not bad either.

Would you count "asked a question to" as "met"? If so, then I've got Jesse Ventura and Paul Wellstone while working for the Fifth Street Journal in high school. I've also interviewed WInona LaDuke for the Hamline Oracle.

Also, I'm famous in my own way. Does that count?
